I’m writing this on the Labour Day weekend, knowing you will not be reading this till almost Thanksgiving. As we start into the season of Autumn, I am aware of the feeling of angst from a summer that didn’t feel like summer, with drought which wrecked crops, the horror of destructive fires, heavy smoke blocking the sun, and a continuing pandemic that adds uncertainty to our lives and presses our medical system.

There was a time when making changes in all things Anglican was difficult. Not so anymore in the times in which we live. When I first began editing The HighWay, people warned me against making changes too soon. As you see the October edition has a new face (front page). I thought it was about time.

This article is dedicated to all those who have made a significant contribution to their parish, but have not received any recognition for their years of service after they retire. I’m not suggesting that the church is remiss in thanking those who offer their time and gifts, but due to different circumstances, sometimes people fall through the cracks, unless someone champions their contribution.

I’m a huge fan of the Muppets. I remember watching Sesame Street with my kids just so I could be part of that fascinating puppet world for a few brief moments. When The Muppet Show appeared on TV in 1976, it became part of my calendar. And of course, I’ve watched all the Muppet movies with Kermit, Miss Piggy et al numerous times.

During my younger years, I learned about Jesus and God. Baptised and confirmed at an early age, I attended religion and bible history classes, bazaars to raise money for the poor and Church on Sundays. As an adult, I studied the bible with like-minded friends, read the prayers and the scripture at church services and taught Sunday School.

Where and what is your heaven on earth? Likely, it would involve a place, a place you call home, a place of family and community, work and leisure, a place made up of the things that define who you are. Imagine for a moment that you have become a refugee, defined by loss of place, of home, community and possibly even family.
