The Ascension; a festival day in the Church, an event in the life of Jesus important enough to be named in the historic creeds, because it says something about what Jesus did for us that has meaning for the life of the Church… a fabulous day to begin our Synod and to ponder the meaning of the Ascension for us now as 21st century people of God.

Except for a few less ‘happy hormones,’ and a few technical hitches, the business of Synod went efficiently well this May. It seems that the underlying theme of Synod was more about how do online meetings compared to face-to-face meetings. And this idea was extended to the way we do church.

My oldest pair of jeans, the ones that are threadbare at the knees, the sloppy sweatshirt, “sloggers” shoes made for gardening, my new garden gloves, a floppy sun hat, and I am ready to relish my time outdoors in the garden. This is a time I have been waiting for.

I have a friend who asked me from time to time, “How is it going with your soul these days?” The first time, I was flustered. No one had ever asked me that question before, and it’s not the kind of question you can answer just like that. The next time, I was ready.

We all need a form of therapy in our lives which builds up the soul and helps us to set aside the stresses of life and to, even for just a moment, helps us to engage in the beauty of simplicity. I have often mused on the fact that God incarnate chose to be a craftsman.
